About the Position

The position of 2nd Department Head follows specific processes as defined in the Procedures Handbook.  The 2nd Department Head is the second most senior crew member and is a role model for the Department. They will partner with the Department Head to ensure consistent communication and processes throughout the department and warehouse. They will manage the Department’s activities during Department Head absence and be a key contributor to managing daily warehouse operations and ensure employees are fulfilling job responsibilities.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Assist Department Head in performing the following:

  • manage the daily Department operation and staff ensuring all processes are properly followed in accordance with the Procedures Handbook
  • train and coach staff on best uses of equipment (including fork lift and order picker as applicable) and procedures; monitor initiatives ensuring effective and efficient implementation
  • ensure equipment is appropriately inspected, cleaned, tested, repaired, modified, manufactured and returned to inventory in an efficient and timely manner as required. Preventative maintenance or innovative solutions are to be used/implemented as required.
  • ensure premises are clean and well organized
  • ensure appropriate staff coverage at all times during work hours
  • ensure all equipment and tools are properly accounted for and safeguarded
  • ensure all processes (including documentation) are reviewed on a continual basis and are as safe, efficient and effective as possible; provide input to develop written procedures as required (best practices); ensure activities are conducted according to legislated requirements
  • identify issues and make recommendations; provide suggestions to Dept. Head on purchase/disposal of items as required; include testing of newly purchased equipment and reviewing appropriate manufacturer’s warranty/guarantee programs when required
  • ensure information flows are open and that staff is informed and motivated
  • collaborate with Department Head regarding strategic direction
  • perform maintenance activities as appropriate and when required
  • maintain relations with other departments on an on-going basis
  • assist other areas of Sim as required
  • ensure adherence to provincial labour and safety guidelines
  • ensure RentalWorks records are maintained: purchase orders, equipment repair log, equipment inventory and issuing new equipment barcodes, etc. as appropriate
  • participate in SAM meetings when required and when Department Head is absent
  • assist in distribution of Standards Bulletins
  • ensure the safeguarding of hazardous materials
  • participate in the Company’s on call rotation, as required

What You’ll Need

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Secondary School education with minimum 5 years of warehouse experience
  • 2 years of people management experience working with shifts and high volumes
  • Practical knowledge of electricity, electronics and mechanical equipment, its applicable legislation and use; electrical or mechanical certification desired
  • Thorough understanding of safety issues
  • Ability to have customer and company perspectives bearing in mind cost-effectiveness and recommendations
  • Adaptable to change, able to prioritize and multi-task
  • Comfort using computers regularly (Outlook, database systems and data networking)
  • Working knowledge of WHMIS 2015 and Workplace Safety
  • ETECP Certification recommended

  • may be required to work outside for extended periods
  • repetitive movement with hands while using equipment
  • some exposure to chemicals
  • frequent bending and kneeling
  • overtime may be required (including weekends)
